    Pune: In a significant medical achievement, a couple from Karad, Maharashtra, who had previously lost two children to spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), has delivered a healthy baby free from the disorder through IVF treatment at Indira IVF Pune.

    For over a decade, the couple struggled with the genetic burden of SMA, a hereditary condition carried by both partners that critically affects child survival. Despite setbacks, their determination led them to seek advanced fertility solutions.

    The treatment plan, designed by Dr Amol Subhash Lunkad, IVF Specialist at Indira IVF Pune, combined genetic counseling, quality control protocols, and continuous evaluation to manage the risk of SMA.

    “Managing genetic conditions like SMA in fertility treatment requires a well-structured approach. With genetic testing and patient understanding, we created a plan that allowed the couple to progress confidently toward parenthood,” Dr Lunkad explained.

    Step-by-step IVF treatment with genetic testing

    The successful outcome was achieved through a carefully structured plan that included:

    • Detailed medical history review and genetic counseling.
    • IVF with ovarian stimulation to monitor egg development.
    • Embryo creation in controlled laboratory conditions, followed by genetic testing.
    • Selection and transfer of an embryo free from SMA, with close monitoring throughout the process.
